When you move in Germany, you must register your new address. This is called the Anmeldung. This page explains how the Anmeldung is affected by COVID-19.

Can I do my Anmeldung at the Bürgeramt?

Yes. The Bürgeramt offers Anmeldung appointments. You can get an appointment on Berlin.de. There are only a few appointments available. You will need to check the website often.

    Can I do my Anmeldung per post or per email?

    Normally, you must do the Anmeldung in person. In Berlin, you could do your Anmeldung by post or email until December 31, 2020. We don't know if this is still possible in 2021. On January 1, the Bürgeramt removed this information from their website.

    Not everyone can register by post or email. You must have registered in Berlin before. If you are new in Berlin, you can't do your Anmeldung by post or email.1

    You must mail or email your documents to the Bürgeramt in your new district. For example, if you move to Pankow, you must send your documents to the Pankow Bürgeramt1. Use the list of Bürgeramt locations to find the correct contact information.

    The Bürgeramt can take a few days or a few weeks to reply1.

    Will I get fined if I don't register within 2 weeks?

    No. You will not get a fine. The fines are suspended because of the Coronavirus. Even before the Coronavirus, people rarely got fined for registering too late.

    What do I do if I can't register my address?

    You can open a bank account without your Anmeldung.

    You do not need a tax ID to start working, but your employer will take more income tax from your paycheque. You will get that money back when you file a tax declaration.
