In Germany, a minijob is a job that pays €556 per month or less.1
Minijobs have a few benefits:
- If you only have a minijob, you pay no income tax,2 unemployment insurance or public pension contributions.
- If you only have a minijob, you can use your spouse’s or your parents’ public health insurance for free.3
Minijobs also have disadvantages:
- Your employer does not pay half of your health insurance. If you are not covered by your family’s health insurance, you might pay half of your salary for health insurance.
- If you lose your minijob, you do not get unemployment benefits.4
