What is a Selbstbeteiligung?

Some insurance policies have a deductible (Selbstbeteiligung). It’s the amount you pay yourself, before the insurance starts covering your costs.

For example, private health insurance can have a €1,000 per year deductible. If you have €3,500 in medical bills, you pay the first €1,000, and your insurance pays the rest.

A higher deductible means lower monthly payments.
