When you move in or move out of an apartment, you should fill a handover document (Übergabeprotokoll or Auszugsprotokoll) with the landlord.
The Übergabeprotokoll describes:
- The condition of the apartment
- What needs to be repaired
- The number of apartment keys that you give or receive
- The numbers on your electricity meter, gas meter and water meter (optional, recommended)1

The Übergabeprotokoll can have any format. You can even create your own. It usually looks like this or this. The Übergabeprotokoll and the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung are sometimes the same document.
