When you leave a job, you ask for a letter of reference (Arbeitszeugnis).
- A standard letter of reference explains when you worked for the employer, and what type of work you did. Your employer can’t refuse to give you this letter.
- A qualified letter of reference (qualifiziertes Arbeitszeugnis) also includes an evaluation of your performance, and why you left the company.2 Your employer can refuse to give you this letter.
- A provisional letter of reference (vorläufiges Arbeitszeugnis) is a letter of reference you receive before your last day of work.3 Your employer can’t refuse to give you this letter.
When you leave a company, your employer is required to give you an Arbeitszeugnis.1 Ask for it in your resignation letter.
